Hi All its me bothering you all again. I wish to put my sail number on my various Rigs and was wondering the best method. I made a template and tried with nikko but wasn't overly happy with the result, needless to say its on there permanantly now. How does everyone else do it? Am I just being a little padantic and thats the norm or is there a better way? Cheers Rob P.S By the way, Steve (TOAD) makes an awsome 18 micron "A Rig" which is unbelievable in drifter/light conditions. Sorry all Toad has since advised me that they are 23micron not 18 micron.

Rob,
I was considering posting a question like this in the last couple of days, so looking forward to other responses. But last night I bit the bullet and had a go. Last week i received a new set of sails (RYSA) and wanted to mark them. I started with the template provided by Notable (linked on the main page) and reprinted with just what i wanted. I then just marked key points by tracing with a near new, black 'sharpie' texta (near new meant it was nice and pointy with no loose bristles). I then used a ruler for the straight bits and freehand for the curves. Then infilled. It is not perfect, but from anymore than 1m away it looks really good. You can see the individual ink strokes and the outlines if you look close enough. Something I was hoping to avoid. This method works, but I am eager to find a better one.
I am also curious if any solvents work for removing old ink. I don't have any offcut or old material built up yet so have not attempted. For some inks methylated spirits would work fairly well, and should not damage any of the polymers. Otherwise acetone will almost certianly dissolve the inks, but might also soften the polymers. If you have the original pen you used it has its own solvents in it. So if you go over it again you should then be able to wipe it away with water (maybe a touch of detergent and/metho as well).

OK Guys, Here's an easy way: Set the numbers using MS Word or similar, try font style Tahoma or Arial, font size 270 point in Tahoma will give you letters that are about 65mm high.
Print the number onto light card, most printers will take this type of stock. Use your hobby knife and cut out the black printed area (difficult with some nimbers like 0 or 6 or9) then place the template over the sail and color it in with Texta easy

I have recently experimented with spray ink. I cut out a template using A5 labels than stuck them onto the sails, and than sprayed with the fast drying ink.Boy, what a mess it made!! The whole lot cleaned up perfectly using acetone and no ill effects for the sails. I redid them using Artline 70. Cheers, Mal

G'day Guys
Depending on what size numbers you prefer (40mm or 60mm or somewhere in between) there is a Template already on the Market.
I used a Fiskars Template Alpha & Number for the 40mm numbers. Strong Plastic and is easy to use. Permanent Marker is all you need. The Template is available from Spotlight, Officeworks & most Craft Supply stores. Could even look on Ebay but ask for Letter/number size
I also had 60mm Templates cut from Acrylic by a Friend of mine in Plastics and now have an option. B Rig is really tight for 3 Digits.
When I was in Queensland, I left a spare 60mm with Graeme. If you are close by perhaps he could loan it out.
I have a spare 60mm so if you are desperate send me your address & I can send via post & you can send back when done (at cost) .. They aren't small so would have to go in Post Pack. expect about $20 in post to send & return.
Cheers

Cheers for all the responses guys. Sounds like we all do it pretty much the same way (No Dirty thinking please). My main concern is what JMcD brought up ref the ink lines/Strokes. Maybe I'm just being to much of a perfectionist. Cheers Rob
You guys need the new and improved "Merot" inking machine. Just a bottle gives perfect results. Keeps the hand steady.
Actually, I just print numbers on A4, slip under sail, tape to stop movement. Then fine Sharpie pen for outline. Ruler on straight lines. And chisel marker pen to fill in.
But usually, Marg steps in and takes over. Easy. Bill

unleaded wrote ... Has anyone ever cut them from adhesive vynal sheet and stuck them on or does this distort the sails to much ray
Ray Avoid the Vinyl. Yes it tends to distort the sails. And is a mess if you don't quite get it right, especially with the Kit Sails. I tried the thinnest Vinyl I could find on a scrap bit of Polyester first & decided on the Permanent Marker Pens. Haven't tried Vinyl on mylar other than the Class Insignia/Logo. With a bit of Metho you can remove permanent marker from the Mylar so sail number changes are possible. On the Kit sails it makes a mess. Cheers John AMMCA Member MM AUS 137
